Story behind this work

From 2008 to 2009, I was associated in the mid-size film festival called Japan Film Festival Los Angeles. I was a lead web coder at the first festival but I became a lead designer, theme developer, and web administrator at the second one.

Not to mention the fact that I enjoyed designing theme, I really enjoyed studying all kinds of plugins to find the best feature for this website’s needs. As implementing new plugins, sometimes I encountered the unknown technical issues. In such situations, I really became enthusiastic to solve these problems. When I finally solved them, I was more than happy with the result.

Unfortunately, the website is now inaccessible due to the end of a contract with the hosting server. I really hope to see this website will come back in the future.

Story behind this work

This is a custom-designed WordPress theme and one of my favorite designs I’ve created. The client, Mrs. Mary Doria Russell was a wonderful lady to work with. She is one of the local novelists who have won several awards in American literature. I am very privileged to be her website designer.

The design concept is simplicity and elegance. Yet, it has to be visually user-friendly since heavy text content dominates the entire website. Thus, considering the design concept and usability, I spent a lot of time to research what is the best practice to bring practicality into being.

I am very happy with what executed in this website design.

この作品について

この作品は。3年以上前に初めて製作したWordPressテーマです。 どうしてここであえて紹介しているかというと？外観的デザインが気に入っており、また初めてと言う事で思い出深い作品だからです。デザインコンセプトは、ただ単に私が好きな日本の海岸ビーチです。　また、典型的な日本のイメージである浮世絵的なデザインも強調してみました。 テーマ名は『Pureland Miyako』で、その名前は「浄土ヶ浜」（岩手県宮古市）の英訳から来てます。 宮古市は私の出身地で高校時代まで過ごした町です。

Pure Land Beach 「浄土ヶ浜」は、宮古市の主な観光地のひとつです。この宮古市は、観光産業で支えられている町と言っても過言ではありません。よって、このテーマをこの町の自然の美しさに捧げる思い出つくりました。

技術的に言うと、製作当時あまりWordPressやCSSに詳しくなかったため、このテーマはあまり洗練されたものではありません。製作当時、は膨大なWordPressドキュメンテーションに圧倒されたのを今でも覚えてます。 確か、テンプレートタグやテンプレートファイルの構造を近いするのに、かなりの時間を要しました。

このテーマ、ずいぶん手なおしなどしてませんが、いつかキレイに作り直して再び配布用にリリースできたら良いなと思います。
